AUTHOR INTERVIEW
What influenced you to write?
The day I read Invisible Life by E. Lynn Harris, the story whispered validations I seemed to be waiting a lifetime for. The words leapt from the page, through my eyes, and straight to my heart. But even before I read that book, I knew I had a story to tell. After reading Harris’ story and other great writers’, I knew I had to tell my story. I wanted to write something that would appeal to my generation—to the people who can’t identify with the bastardization of our culture in books, and media—and want someone who looks, acts, and lives like them.
Why do you write?
My goal in writing is to provide myself and others with an outlet. When you read my books, I take you on a journey. When I write, I go on a journey. I want to give my readers someone to identify with. After all, we all go through life wanting to be validated—my greatest compliment is when someone tells me how much they enjoy my writing. It validates me and in a way validates them also. It’s like a beautiful cycle that inspires me to do better. I try my best to put out great quality work and hope that the public appreciates it. At the end of the day, I view myself as an artist. I carry all the quirks that come along with being creative. Presenting my vulnerability to the world isn’t easy. But thankfully I’ve gotten very positive feedback.
What are your biggest obstacles?
Being a self-published author isn’t easy. It is a lot of work and I must admit I don’t do all that I should be doing. There are so many catch 22’s in the publishing world. It can be frustrating. But even though I am not with a major publishing house, I try my best to create material that looks and is- just as good.
Also, it can be hard to get people reading. At times it seems like they would rather do anything but read. However, I’m here for those that do.
What do you want your readers to know?
I want my readers to know how much I appreciate them. They are my lifelines in this business. To everybody who buys books, asks for my books at their local stores, asks for me at pride events, and spreads the word, I am so grateful. Keep putting in your requests to the bookstores and spreading the word. We are about to do something wonderful.
WELL, I'M HERE FOR THOSE THAT DO
